Overview: What is an Extension in a Corrective Wave?
In Elliott Wave Theory, extension is basically a phenomenon seen in impulses (motive waves) (→ Wave Extension). However, similar extension phenomena also occur in corrective waves.
Extensions in corrective waves appear in the form of development into more complex wave forms when a single basic form (single zigzag, flat, or triangle) cannot perform sufficient price retracement or time correction. Specifically, this includes the 9-wave development of a triangle, the combination of zigzags (double/triple zigzag), and the development into complex corrective waves (double/triple three).

Triangle: one of waves B–E becomes a triangle itself → 9-wave structure
A normal triangle has a 5-wave structure of A-B-C-D-E, but one of its waves B–E may internally form another triangle. In this case, the whole becomes a 9-wave structure triangle — an extended triangle.

Zigzag: insufficient retracement → double zigzag / triple zigzag
When a single zigzag (3-wave A-B-C) cannot perform sufficient price retracement, another zigzag develops via an X wave (connector wave), extending into a W-X-Y double zigzag, and if still insufficient, into a W-X-Y-X-Z triple zigzag. This is an extension on the price retracement side.

Insufficient time correction → double three / triple three
When a sideways corrective wave provides insufficient time correction, corrective waves are linked via X waves and extend into a double three (W-X-Y) or a triple three (W-X-Y-X-Z). This is an extension on the time correction side rather than the price side.
